Indoor Saunas for UK Homes
Convert a loft, garage, utility or ensuite into a cedar-lined home sauna — the moisture, ventilation and electrical rules that make the difference between a thirty-year cabin and a damp problem.

Best rooms for an indoor sauna
Most UK homes have at least one viable spot. Pick the one that matches your build ambition — and your tolerance for floorboards-up surprises.
Spare bedroom or ensuite
- Already plumbed for shower / cool-down
- Insulated & weather-tight
- Easy electrical access
- Floor loading on upper storeys (~250kg+)
- Vapour control critical to protect plaster
Garage or outbuilding (attached)
- Concrete slab handles load and water
- Easier to run a 32A circuit
- Tolerates a more rugged build
- Cold structure — needs more insulation
- May need a damp-proof membrane
Loft conversion
- Quiet, private, beautiful eaves geometry
- Often already insulated to current Building Regs
- Floor loading and joist span checks essential
- Make-up air supply needs careful planning
- Stairs make stone delivery a workout
Utility / boot room
- Drainage often already present
- Tiled, water-tolerant finishes nearby
- Often the smallest room — measure twice
- Boiler / appliance heat can compete with ventilation
Get these right — everything else follows
Indoor saunas fail in the same four ways. Nail these and you've solved 90% of the build.
Vapour foil is non-negotiable
Indoors, a single missing seam will dump moisture into your wall cavity and rot timber from the inside. Use a continuous aluminium vapour foil behind the cladding, all seams taped with foil tape, lapped 100mm minimum, and dressed into the door frame.
Ventilation & make-up air
Inlet low and behind the heater (50–100mm dia), outlet high on the opposite wall to draw heat across the bathers. Indoors, the outlet must vent to outside — never into the loft, never into another room. A passive vent works for electric heaters; wood-fired needs a dedicated combustion air supply.
Part P electrics
Anything above 3kW typically needs a dedicated radial circuit with RCD protection — and the install must be certified by a Part P registered electrician. Wi-Fi controllers (Huum UKU, MyHarvia) sit outside the cabin and need their own low-voltage run.
Floor loading & drainage
A finished cedar sauna with stones and water can weigh 300–500kg. Check joist sizing on upper floors. A small stainless floor gully under the duckboard is gold — but a tanked tray with a 2% fall to a corner gully is the next-best thing.
The 1.2 × 1.2m closet sauna
The minimum viable indoor sauna for one bather. Fits into a generous airing cupboard or the corner of an ensuite.
- Footprint: 1200 × 1200mm internal, 2000mm ceiling — tall enough to stand under, tight enough to heat fast.
- Heater: 4.5kW electric (Harvia Vega, Sentiotec Concept R Mini, or Huum Drop on a 32A circuit).
- Bench: Single L-shape at 1050mm — sit Finnish-style, feet up. No upper bench needed.
- Door: Full-glass 600 × 1800mm, magnetic catch, opens outward.
- Cladding: 14mm thermo-aspen tongue-and-groove. Cedar reads heavier in a small space.
- Build cost: Roughly £2,400–£3,200 in materials, plus electrical install.
